Funny: an ebay seller warns KOH is an oxidizer ...

This item on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200556...

says
! Achtung !
Kaliumhydroxid ist in konzentrierter und mit Wasser verdünnter Form ein starkes und gefährliches Oxidationsmittel und muß mit größter Vorsicht beachtet werden.

in other words:

! Warning !

Potassium hydroxide is in concentrated state and diluted with water a strong and dangerous oxidizer and should be handled with greatest care.

Funny that they do not warn for the real hazards (caustic / corrosive). I don't think such suppliers are very reliable.

Perhaps even more strange is that the seller lists it as 99.5 %, as it usually never exceeds 90% in purity....

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

In my a bit out of date J.T. Baker catalogue ...

Sodium Hydroxide, Pellets NF
Meets NF Requirements
Assay (NaOH) 95-100%

Meets BP, PhEur Chemcial Specifications
Assay (NaOH) 97.0-100.5% [sic]

Meets JP Chemical Sepcifications
Assay 95.0-101.0% [sic]

Baker Analyzed ACS Reagent
Assay (NaOH) (by acidimetry) min. 98%

Now we can all go back to sleep.

Purity data on potassium hydroxide often excludes water.
For instance Sigma Aldrich list semi conductor grade potassium hydroxide as 99.99% but the small print reveals that it contains ca 15% water.
http://www.sigmaaldrich.com/catalog/ProductDetail.do?lang=en...
A quick perusal of their other grades reveals that they are 85 - 90% pure but the major impurity is water.

Ooop's Sorry. The original question was KOH not NaOH. I have to stop putting magic mushrooms on
my pizza before posting.
