Hello all. I occasionally hear from people who have followed this thread through the years who are convinced that I, for whatever reason, have fabricated this whole sorry mess. I recently decided to break my own rule and post a couple of photos of the surgical aftermath. Then I ran into an obstacle. Is there any way to post JPEGs to this forum?

I am sorry to hear that you are pestered by people who are too dim witted or scared to post their doubts in the open forum. You don't have anything to prove. Obviously it is up to you if you decide to post pictures, which are no doubt very personal and possibly distressing to you, but only do it if it is doing something for you, not for some troll that can't see the immense value in the story that you have already shared and the extraordinary bravery that it has no doubt taken to do so.

Yeah, I think I need to share these even though they're not pretty. This is six days after the accident. At this point in my recovery, surgeons have sutured my right thumb into my abdomen in order to grow tissue onto the denuded bone. Fifteen surgeries and almost fourteen years later, it actually looks and functions something like an opposable thumb. Note the shrapnel injuries to my chest and forearms. I'm still shedding bits of glass to this day.

Glad to see you chugging along still. The hand healed impressively, very fortunate.

The right hand came out brilliantly compared to the first photo.

I always remember your accident whenever I am handling any "lively" compounds which makes me double check all safety measures.

I am sorry if people questioned your claims. Not sure why someone would lie about something like that.

I wish you all the best and I hope you continue to stick around.

I have a couple battle buds that have lost some limbs similarly in theatre, some better some worse.

It's clearly not keeping you down man.

Stay resilient!

Dear Yamato71,

I read your story and the aftermath, and how you handled it—that really impressed me.
I had a stupid accident with about 500 mg of Armstrong’s mixture: I’d put the dry powder into a plastic container (for slide film), put the lid on loosely, and shook it to mix it (without thinking). Luckily, I was only holding it with the fingertips of my left hand, and when it exploded, the fingertips were gone. This happened to me in 1987 when I was 19. My parents were at work, so I was home alone. I dialed 911 and, just like I’d learned in school, made the call. Then, despite my injured hand, I put on my shoes and tied them. I didn’t feel any pain until I got to the hospital, where they gave me a local anesthetic in my hand, and the surgeons had no choice but to amputate. I was in the hospital for three days and then had to retake my high school entrance exam because the accident happened exactly one day before the exams were supposed to start.
If I’d been holding that in my fist, my hand would probably have been pretty much gone.
Fortunately, I have virtually no limitations on my left side, likely because my thumb (which has gotten a bit wider and was resting on the lid of the container during the explosion) and my index finger (which I had extended) remained unharmed. My left ear is “sensitive to sound,” meaning it starts to hurt when I listen to loud music. Other than that, I don’t notice any limitations. Children and teenagers tend to react with curiosity, if they even notice it at all, and I often use this injury to warn them when the conversation turns to pyrotechnic mixtures—which happens when they realize that I’m very interested in chemistry and also pursue chemistry, photography, and so on.

Here is a picture of my left hand; the two crosses mark the ends of a scar where a tear eventually formed. However, the tendons were not affected:
