hydrated magnesium sulphate synthesis

okay here's the deal:
i need to plan and synthesise hydrated magnesium sulphate crystals from magnesium carbonate.
i am given MgCO3, H2SO4, distilled water, ethanol, filter paper (and other measuring thingos)
how the hell do i do this? [i needto know before monday!]

Shouldn´t be here I believe but wtf..

Add the carbonate to diluted H2SO4, filter, wash the crystals with ethanol, done.

OMG... is this a big coincidence, OR do you go to the EXACT same school as me. I have the EXACT practical due to be planned by the EXACT same date.

Let me guess... the H2SO4 they are supplying is.... 1 M? Thats what I got. How did you find this forum... maybe I forgot to sign out? :)

Step 1. Get into car, start engine etc.
Step 2. Locate "Epsom Salts" at grocery store, drug store, etc.
Step 3. Open carton.

Synthesis complete :P

I already thought of that. :P

But this is a monitored synthesis thing, a teacher would likely notice you placing MgSO4.7H2O from an epsom salts packet into the sample bottle. :(:D

Yep, maybe that is why the teacher picked such an easy synthesis to test your ethics and to see if you can complete a simple proceedure. If it helps any sulfates really dont dissolve well in alcohol. I used espon salts in a sythesis and when the sulfates contaminated my product I dissolved in denatured alcohol and had a nice sulfate deposit on the bottom. my product was reasonalby pure enough for my use but contained alchol of crystalization. So, after that was gone, it took up water like a crack whore and turned into a oatmeal like mash!

Oh yeah, if you all wondered what I was talking about, Magnesium bromide hexahydrate was my desired product. I have several pictures and I a detailed account but I want to try a better yeilding synthesis first before I post my experiments.
