Max Klemke (1994 - 2010)

To every ScienceMadness member,

I want to recall Myfanwy (Max Klemke) who sadly died experimenting at age 15.

Today is his 20th birthday (12.12.1994. - 12.12.2014).

That's sad. I'm 15. I'm now really hoping to get unscathed to 16. I know I can prevent stupid accidents, but still...
A sad recollection.

I think pulmonary edema could be managed depending on the lung tissue damage/inflammation. I hope someone who knew him could write about what happened. Thanks in advance.

It seems that he wanted to make oxalyl chloride when the accident happened which saddens me because back then I too wanted to have it for chemiluminescence.

Phosgene kills by pulmonary edema, it is the terminal phase. There really is no effective treatment.

His last post I think is on this thread:
http://www.sciencemadness.org/talk/viewthread.php?tid=13590

It appears that he was trying to make oxalyl chloride using a process involving trichloroisocyanuric acid and oxalic acid.

I see there are several threads that discuss variations of reactions of TCCA or TCT along these lines. it might be very helpful if someone could write-up a prepub on preparing oxalyl chloride safely to prevent a recurrence.

Such a sad end to great enthusiasm, and fearlessness.

Hopefully we can learn something from his passing.

That's a good question. I've yet to see any kind of reliable statement or source that makes a strong case for him having died at all. I'm not saying that there isn't one, but it could all just have started from some rumor.

Max Klemke (aka Myfanwy) had a chemistry YouTube channel:

Most of his videos were about reactive/explosive materials.

If I remember right, someone who at least knew him a little had seen his passing in the news where it said suicide because of cyanide poisoning, but he was actually just trying to make hydrogen cyanide??? I've also heard the thing about him dying from pulmonary edema, but I don't know which is right. But yeah, many believe he has died, but I know of no sources.

I hate to bring up an old topic, but to be frank, this subject has been eating at me for months now: has anyone seen any news article or anything to prove that Max actually died the way we believe he did? I have been staying up late for nights researching about him, but I can't find anything, not a single article relating to this poor boy's likely death! It's strange—like I need closure or something...

Depends where he was from, in the UK its really hard to get personal information on people, even news stuff is pretty hard to dig up by a persons name.
