How can I make ferrofluid that spike up?

Hello, I'm kinda new to this forum, so hopefully this post is fine (I tried searching this topic for a while and I haven't found any useful.)
So I already made Iron(II,III) Oxide by mixing Ferrous and Ferric chloride in the presence of sodium hydroxide. But I'm not sure to convert it to ferrofluid. I tried a few times using oleic acid and vegetable oil but after a while the magnetite seems to sink in the oil. I tried different ratios. I think the problem is either the particle size or the ratio I'm using. I use oleic acid for the surfactant and vegetable oil for the carrier fluid.
Thanks!
