Contact Time?
Hi all I did not know where to post this so I decided here as it might be of aid to someone else who also does not understand this. My question is can
someone explain to me "contact time." Very often in synthesis's I see this expression. For example one such literature I was reading today states
that a certain liquid is vaporized and passed over a fixed catalyst bed of copper with a contact time of 10 seconds. How can I convert this into a
usable unit to reproduce this experiment? Is there a direct correlation to flow rate? It states that a metered pump was used during liquid phase which
leads me to believe there is a correlation. If someone could post a formula to convert this I would be very thankful. Thanks!

A little bit of math seems to be applicable, if you know the tube diameter and length, you can calculate the volume. Once you know the volume of the
catalyst bed, you can adjust your flow rate so that it takes 10 seconds for a plug of gas to move from the beginning to the end.
Thats my guess at least.
