1,3-propanediol
Does anyone know how to prepare 1,3-propanediol? I need it to make malonic acid.
There is very little information about the preparation of this chemical on this forum or on google.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Where are you in the world. There may be a source of 1,3-diol or malonic acid, depending on where you are.

From wikipedia;
'1,3-Propanediol may be chemically synthesized by the hydration of acrolein, or by the hydroformylation of ethylene oxide to afford
3-hydroxypropionaldehyde. The aldehyde is hydrogenated to give 1,3-propanediol.
Two other routes involve bioprocessing by certain micro-organisms:'

You might want to consult this thread on malonic acid. Apparently some antifreeze contains the diol.

Malonic Acid Suppliers
Depending on your location, there are at least 2 suppliers of it currently on ebay:

A possibly relevant articles, although I have no journal access.
Conversion of Glycerol to 1,3-Propanediol via Selective Dehydroxylation

Though acetylation is a bit hard-core, considering malonic acid can be bought with probably less scrutiny than acetic anhydride.
The only other methods I've really found in the literature use bacterial cultures to metabolize glycol into the desired compounds.
Wow buying 500g-1000g malonic acid on ebay? Sketchy?

It is an interesting paper, Smaerd, with some approachable glycerol chemistry.

Excellent paper, some good chemical engineering. Using pyridine in a chemical plant, smells like fun
BTW its not acetylization, its acetAlization with benzaldehyde.

I'v read that the glycol Magpie suggested, that has 1,3 propanediol made by Du pont & Tate and Lyle who have a patent on method making it from
corn syrup with geneticaly modified E. Coli
I have a friend who was intern at local biochemistry company,i might ask if he knows anything about the bacteria.
I suppose if they are a smart company, they keep the bacteria to themself?
And if i remember the episode of numb3rs correctly, DNA synthetiser is a hard thing to steal, so im not going to do that either
but, iv read there are companies selling bacteria online, and that are willing to sell them to individuals too.Would the E. Coli that id pull from my
ass work in doing the same chemical reaction work in smaller yelds?
