Chemical Garden

So from what I understand, you can use any chemical in a chemical garden, as long as it forms an insoluble silicate. Is this correct? Could there be any other limiting factors. Could there be silicates that decomposes in the presence of light, and thus do not allow the garden to grow? Or maybe silicates that react with other un reacted compounds?

So in summary, what other limiting factors are there?

Sincerely
Mirage
