What would I be buying - phenol
The easiest source of phenol for me is via my favourite online shopping site;
https://my.shp.ee/1iLwFih
If this is 45% phenol what is the other 55% likely to be
and is it likely that I can purify the phenol?

Can’t see the page without logging in. I would assume it’s aqueous. Phenol is very hygroscopic and it’s common to sell it as a solution in
water.

I'm not logging on to that site, and I have no intention of becoming a member there.
Also, you have never revealed your country of origin. Buying Phenol directly might just get you in a shit-load of trouble, depending upon your
location.
Handle with great caution. It can burn the living crap out of you, without your even feeling it.
Since it is a local anesthetic, you may be unaware of the damage it is doing to your skin. The way I remember it, large blisters quickly rise up on
any area it touches, but you feel nothing whatsoever while this process is taking place.
Here, in the United States, Phenol might be considered a highly suspicious purchase. Seems to me, there was a well publicized arrest here, a few
years back... On account of a guy tried to buy a lot of Phenol, for no apparent legal reason.
The suspicion was, that he intended to convert it to Picric Acid. An explosive quite similar to TNT, but somewhat more easy to synthesize. Not as
stable as TNT, but easier to "cook-up", on account of the Phenolic Hydroxyl group being a
stronger activator of the Aromatic Ring as compared to Toluene's Methyl group.
Of course, I could easily be wrong about everything I just stated.
Some of the guys suggest, that Phenol can be easily synthesized by decarboxylating Aspirin. Veterinary Aspirin is very inexpensive and easily
purchased in some jurisdictions.

I certainly would not want my details in some random oversees site either!
I've read of the hazards but I have no experience of them.
I'll just treat it based on perceived hazards.
Carbolic soap was common when I was a kid,
and my grandmother was familiar with carbolic acid,
now, people interested in home chemistry are drug cooks or terrorists - in the west
here (Malaysia), to a large degree, if you don't cause trouble no one cares much.
I had a quick look at picric acid - doable, but not my interest.
I rarely nitrated stuff, nitrocellulose is my limit.
(as a youth I tried, and (luckily) failed, to make TNT)
------------------------------
sold out, not available
when I actually need some I'll consider decarboxylation
(probably salicylic acid or methyl salicylate as starting material due to purity and availability...tbd)
