You cannot attempt to appease every law enforcement official, every lawyer, judge, etc. whilst also contenting yourself and family in practicing your hobbies/interests. Laws have become (to me at the least) increasingly diluted in importance simply due to the vastness of their proportion and ever-changing nature they exhibit - every new administration constantly amends legislation to suit their lobbysists. And although it doesnt justify you or I acting afoul of the law, major companies and organizations bypass laws with practically no regard whilst getting a slap on the wrist in most cases.

If you practice chemistry safely in relation to your family and community, I wouldnt worry about disposing of your collection. Especially since you seem already fairly confident in your safety factor, and only less so in your ability to seem law-abiding to the police.
