Vortex tubes are used commercially in plants that already use compressed air extensively. They tend to be rather noisy, and not really efficient, but
are fairly compact and as they don't have moving parts are handy for difficult to access areas.
You're not going to get above the Carnot limit on the heat-engine type coolers. When heat is the driving force, as in the E-L coolers, the rejected
heat is of lower grade than the heat used to separate ammonia and water. So you have the heat transfered from the cold spot plus the heat used to
drive the refrigerator, which must be removed at a lower temperature than the heater. So X watts pumped out at 0 C, Y watts at 80 C to separate NH3,
giving X+Y watts at say 40 C that must be removed.
The E-L coolers are not going to do do anything that a conventional compressor can't do. The big advantage of them is that they do not have moving
parts. They are less efficient than conventional coolers, and have more restricted temperature ranges due to the requirements of the working fluids.

In the past times so-calle cold-mixtures were used:
==> ice + a very soluble salt (in mol/liter)
==> eg. ice + NH4NO3 gives a stable temperature at -55 Celsius
The temp can be calculated by the clausius-clapeyron-equation; maybe NaClO4 performs even better ?? NaCl gives -21 Cels.
Besides: A standard-refrigerator goes down to - 34 Cels (I have 2 of that sort), if the temp-controller is defective and the compressor runs
continuously ...
