electromagnetic ore separation

I am building an ore drum separator. I am not sure of the electrical/magnetic connections. What I need to know is can AC be used or should it be fed via DC ? Is there anyone on this forum involved with electrostatics ?

Checkout some of the old Edison patents http://www.google.com/patents

Those guys documented everything quite well and spent alot of time and money on magnetic ore separation.
