Piperine Extraction Question

I’m trying to extract piperine from black pepper. The following is one part of the procedure:

…. The concentrated extract was then added to 20 ml of 10% KOH in Everclear which was heated on a low setting on a hot plate….

I have KOH, in a granular form, and I have Everclear, my question is what exactly is 10% KOH in Everclear. Would this mean 10% by weight? Would it mean to weigh 9 gms of Everclear and add one gram of KOH?

Any answers would be appreciated.

Oh my oh my...

This should really be in beginnings, and possibly not a thread at all...

There are a number of ways of removing piperine from pepper. One thing that would help would be where that failed attempt at a quote came from. But yes generally a 10% sol of KOH in ethanol would be done by weight. And if your KOH is not dissolving then you can dissolve your KOH in a minimal amount of water before adding it to ethanol.
Good luck, and just for future referance 5 mins on google could have answered any questions on alkaloid extractions.
