Nitroethane from beta alanine
Hi all. I found a synthesis of nitroethane but I think it’s FAKE, what do you think?
25 g of beta-alanine was dissolved in 100 ml of water, 38 g of calcium hydroxide was added. Heated under reflux to 100 degrees Celsius and kept at
this temperature for 1 hour. The ethylamine solution with a characteristic odor was drained from the calcium carbonate precipitate and filtered under
vacuum. 73 g of potassium dichromate was placed in a flask, 100 ml of water was added, heated until completely dissolved, cooled to room temperature
(dichromate crystals precipitate). An ethylamine solution was slowly poured through a dropping funnel, heated to 40 degrees and kept for 2 hours. The
color of the mixture changed to gray-green (precipitation of chromium hydroxide). The mixture was drained from the sediment, filtered, 10 g of sodium
bicarbonate was added, mixed and divided into a funnel. Crude nitroethane was dried over calcium chloride for 10 hours. Yield 10.7 ml (11.25 g) dry
