Terrifying Moment today while using sodium propionate and sodium pyrosulfate
I was following the synthesis method written by hypnos: https://www.sciencemadness.org/whisper/viewthread.php?tid=12...
I had the sodium propionate in the flask mixed well with the sodium pyrosulfate. I turned the heat on with stirring and reflux. At around 75 Celsius I
started seeing vapor come out of the top of the condenser. I thought maybe my condenser wasn’t long enough or the liquid wasn’t cold enough. So I
changed it to the largest condenser I have (600mm) and used ice water. Still, the vapors were coming out. That’s when I smelled garlic pizza smell
from the vapor. I quickly turned everything off and got as far away as possible.
Can someone explain what happened to me? I’m suspecting arsine or phosphine but how did it get into my product?

Weird, but my reading of the linked thread, has the reaction done in a captive top beer bottle (ceramic plug with gasket and latch mechanism).
Reacting for two hours, then distilled out
You have it set for reflux.
I'd imagine that it was meant to take pressure to keep stuff in there working, only final product distilled at the end at a higher temp.
Just a guess based on reading I've never attempted anything like this and have zero experience here

How did you reflux a mixture of salts? It should char before it boils.
