Steve,

I looked at the following KNF/VWR website:

http://www.knf.com/vwr.htm

It says that it is advisable to use a dry ice cold trap ahead of the pump. What is the advantage of a Teflon oilless pump if you have to set up a cold trap anyway?

I think you could have answered that for yourself ;) Everything that eventually escapes the trap will do less damage to a teflon pump head than it would to a neoprene/aluminum/steel head.

I do not use traps with diaphragm pumps.

I own a KNF SCC 820 dual vac controlled pump stand and it only includes a Woulff bottle to remove particles, everything else is blown out of the exhaust. Not seeing the use of a trap here.

Where I worked we used teflon diaphragm pumps for rotovaps, whatever wasn't codensed by the chiller (-10c) went through the pump. The pumps have lasted for years of very heavy use, without rebuild, and still pull very good vacuums (for diaphragm pumps).
