Validity of this forumla ?

Posted: Tue Feb 24, 2004 12:47 pm Post subject: Re: Is it possible to make hypophosphorous acid using Phosphoric Acid ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think the chemical formulation of Iodine Hypophosphoric acid is I-O-Ph

This could probably be made from NaOCl using HCl

2 NaOCl + HCl + I = 2NaCl + (I-OH)

From here you can make your IOPh by adding your Phosphoric Acid

Seperate the salt from the IOH first though...

I brought the question here because the guy that posted this reply is always posting ridiculous formulas but sometimes he does post acurate information. After reading some of the info here I believe I have found a more knowledgable resource.

Would you please take the LITTLE effort to compose a new, COHERENT post for this forum instead of copy pasting some unreadable goofy stuff from another forum??

Thank you.

I have a very strong urge to close this thread...

You're questioning the validity of this formula:

2 NaOCl + HCl + I = 2NaCl + (I-OH)

All the other information is irrelevent, I believe most people here will be able to give you a good answer as many use HCl + NaOCl to make Cl2 and are therefore firmilar with part of this formula. Either it works by the Cl2 produced oxidizing the I2 or it works by the NaOCl oxidizing the I2, however I know nothing of the stability of HOI.

You are ofcourse correct Vulture I will only say that I thought copy and pasting it would eliminate the possiblity of my screwing it up in translation.

My purpose orginally was to determine if it is possible to use phosphoric acid, which I have 5 gallons of, in a synthesis of hypophosphorus acid. As I understand it phosphoric acid is the product of degradation of hypophosphorus acid so I am basically asking if the proccess is reversable.

As I said the person who posted that formula has a tendency to purposefully give bad information. I came here because people seem to be more serious and knowledgable.

I do apolagize for the understandable although unintended insult.

You might consider changing nickname. I chose mine based on an old Swedish saying: "goddag yxskaft", which means approximately "hello idiot". "Yxskaft" == "Axehandle".

"Einstein" is just a bit too..... much..... no insult intended.

Acid Tests post contains nothing either correct or useful.

There is no way I know of reducing phosphoric acid to hypophosphorous acid. Since it decomposes at high temps (reportadly >200C) I suspect this will not be easy. Attempts will probably produce phosphorous or phosphine instead.

I do notice that the Rhodium page tells us how to make it from white P, but fails to mention explicitly that vast quantities of phosphine are produced, or how toxic this is. Given that plenty of wannabe meth chemists have died from quite small amounts of phosphine produced by overheating hypophosphite residues from RedP/I2 reductions this is something of an oversight IMHO.

Thank you for your responce. I agree with you about the failure to note the toxicity of phosphine on that site. I actually did a double take to make sure it was really phosphine being refrenced. Anywhere else the word phosphine is used it is usually follow by nearly a paragraph of warnings.

Thx Again.
