Thionyl diazide?? If such a thing exists, my guess would be a double bond between S and O, and the azide groups attached to the sulphur atom at an angle of 120<sup>o</sup>

If you managed to prepare such a compound, it would be extremely unstable, due to the largely covalent character of the azide bond. And two such azide linkages to the sulphur atom? That seems like a formula worthy of decomposition "in situ", as soon as it is prepared!

What method did you use to verify that the compound you synthesized was indeed thionyl diazide?

SOCl2 + 2(CH3)3SiN3 ---> SO(N3)2 + 2(CH3)3SiCl

Timethylsilyl Azide being a very effective compound to put the azide group on basically anything under anhydrous conditions because it is suprisingly stable toward heat but overall quite reactive. I recently read a good rxn. with this compound that took place in CH3OCH2CH2OCH2CH2OCH3 the reason I started the tread on symetrical polyethers.

However that's just one guess on how it could have been made.
