Oxidation of 4-nitrotoluene

Source: http://www.lambdasyn.org/synfiles/benzocain.htm

I want the p-aminobenzoic acid, but instead of reducing the p-nitrotoluene to p-toluidine hcl, basification, acetylation and KMnO4, can't i just oxidize the p-nitrotoluene to p-nitrobenzoic acid first and then just reduce the nitro to p-aminobenzoic hcl?

The question is whether you can obtain p-nitrobenzoic acid from p-nitrotoluene with KMnO4. Somehow I think this is going to be trouble, but if you are willing to try that would be great. The next step should be possible.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4-Nitrobenzoic_acid.
