Cheapest OTC way to decarboxylate phenylalanine to phenylethylamine

Can it be done for under $0.10 a gram?

I read on this forum that heated phenylalanine degrades to phenylacetone, and on another forum that it gives off phenylethylamine gas? Is this true?

If so couldn't the gas simply be condensed - making this an almost free way of doing it?

Reduction of any of the two phenylalanines can not give any of the two possible phenylethylamines.

One carbon is lost in the transformation, so it is obviously not just a reduction. To understand what happens during a reduction, please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxidation_number

Decarboxylation is what I'm thinking of then?

Really just how to get (extract?) phenylethylamine from phenylanine, in the cheapest fashion.

You can not extract any phenylethylamine from phenylalanine, because phenylalanine normally does not contain phenylethylamines.

You can prepare 2-phenylethylamine from phenylalanine by using one of the dozen decarboxylation procedures described in the literature. This topic has been discussed earlier, so please UTFSE for the pertaining references that were already gathered on this forum.

As for the question regarding economy... I don't work in any purchasing department so I don't have access to the data required (which is a matter of bargaining with the suppliers anyway). Besides, you stated no prices or bulk sizes for the materials you need, so the question is pretty much unanswerable. But one thing is certain, it can never be an economic process when you are making a product that is in every case much cheaper than the starting material! Have you checked the prices of the starting material and the product? The Si*ma-Al*rich comparison for prices of DL-phenylalanine vs. 2-phenylethylamine is 2 : 1. I doubt the ratio could ever be turned opposite by bargaining with the Chinese producers or buying large, as the price reflects the ease of production.

Take the phenylalanine, mix it with some marijuana, get really stoned, and then go to your local psychiatrist and tell him you have trouble focusing.

Thats the quickest route from phenylalanine to phenethylamine

"phenylethylamine gas" REALLY?

What do you want that for, anyway?

Look up Strecker degradation, and please, don't start SWIMming in this pond.
