electron arrangement of Ion


I'm not real sure how to find the electron arrangement of an ion.
I have these:
Sodium: 2-8
Nitrogen: 2-8
Aluminum: ?
Chlorine: ?
Calcium: ?
Oxygen: ?

It is the number of electrons in each energy level
sodium is 2)8)1 corresponding to 2 electrons in the first energy level, 8 in the second energy level and 1 in the valence.
nitrogen 2)5
Aluminum 2)8)3
chlorine 2)8)7

The first energy level can only hold 2 electrons, the second and 3rd 8 electrons, 4th and 5th 18 electrons and so on. Try the rest and if you still have problems I will try to clarify a bit more.

Jewels has asked for the electron configuration of ions. For sodium ion (Na+) this would be 2)8 and for the nitride ion (N---) 2)8 as indicated. This shows that electrons have been subtracted from the element quantity (which = at. no.) for the metal sodium[sodium = 2)8)1] and added to the nonmetal nitrogen [nitrogen = 2)5].
