Based on safety concerns, a crude guide would be to start with naturally occurring compounds. Examples: H2, N2, O2, He, Ar, NaCl, NaI, KCl, NaBr, MgCl2, Na2B4O7.10H2O, HgS, PbS, C, S, CaF2, ZnS, K2(UO2)2(VO4)2ยท3H2O, Au, CuFeS2,(Fe,Mn)WO4, SrSO4, (Ce,La)PO4, ...

Or course! That is a great idea :) I was starting to wonder about that, considering many of the safest chemical forms of elements are found as minerals.
