I’ve done this before without problems: just dissolve as much iron into hot 37 % HCl as will go into solution. On cooling and icing blocky emerald green crystals (FeCl2.4H2O) crystallise out.

But on separation from the mother liquor these crystal tend to surface oxidise quite quickly to Fe (III)…
