Lacton opening problem

Hello chem.
Am doing mannich rxn using dimethyl amine with formalin (common sense) with astructure containg lacton five member ring and methyl keton...
Unfortunately... From IR spectroscopy i realize that the ring had been opened... Is it usual!?...
Note:the molar ratio was not 1 to 1. Sec amine and formalin were in access
Thx in advance

The excess dimethylamine may have opened the lactone ring to give an amide.
