help with amine-->>>imine chemistry


I am trying to react and aldehyde (formaldehyde) with a primary amine (L-Lysine) to yield an imine adduct. These imine -like compounds form at the greatest rate at pH of around 5. Water is a by-product, and removal of water yields the imine. I assume water as a solvent should be avoided, since imines are easily hydrolysed. My problem is, L-lysine seems to be insoluble in everthing EXCEPT water! Formalin also contains water, but I can get around that by generating formaldehyde gas. Any suggestions as to how to perform this condensation without water?

Abstract: A formaldehyde/amine adduct useful in water treatment having improved stability made by reacting formaldehyde and a secondary amine, limiting the water content of the adduct to no more that 30 weight percent, optionally, adding an alcohol

dean stark apparatus maybe your solution


if you use dean stark with toluen/water mixture (you can change toluen with anytihing which boiling point is higher than water and density is lower).
