Quantum dots.
Anyone else here fascinated by these things? I think flourescent things are neat in general, but these have to take the prize for being the coolest.
This page makes me think that they might actually be quite easy to make:

The question is, has anyone here tried? Or has anyone seen them cheaper than here?

They're pretty easy to make. We made them in Physical Chemistry in college. Very fun stuff, we worked mostly with gold Q-dots but also made cadmium
and other Q-dots. Messed around with the surface chemistry of them to give different colors and solubilities and also made all sorts of different
colors.
I had a conversation (not on the forum) with Chemoleo regarding Q-dots and their applications to biological studies (for their use as tracers) however
there wasn't a whole lot of information on how to practically use them for this in the current literature at the time (that we could find).

Any chance you could post a brief outline of the methods you used in college?

Some articles from Journal of Chemical Education about quantum dot experiments... I haven't tried any of these (or necessarily actually read these
particular articles ) but they seem relevant. I will try and post the articles
if I can figure out how to add attachments...
Experiments from Journal of Chemical Education, mostly with supplemental material, which is additional info intended for the
instructor that does not make it onto the printed article.

Nick, although not all the preps we followed were included in the attachments pantone supplied I did do two of them. I do not have the other
procedures that we followed though, at least not handy.
