nitric acid/polystyrene

From a pdf called kitchen improvised, there is a composition of a nitric acid/polystyrene explosive. VoD it is said that it is at 7600M/sec.

Here is the manufacture process copy-paste from the pdf file

In a quart jar place 415 grams of 95% nitric acid (see nitric acid section). 85 grams of polystyrene powder is added.
Powdered polystyrene is made by placing the polystyrene foamed beads in a blender a few at a time. Blend at high
setting until powdered sufficiently. After adding all the polystyrene heat to 40 degrees C. in an oil or water bath with
stirring and continue stirring for 30 minutes. The compound will set up and become a tacky gell suitable for plastique
explosive applications

Has anybody try that ? it looks interesting as it looks easy to manufacture and its VoD is high

I would like to know the impact sensitivity.

If it is a gel, then it is advantages, you can mix it with other explosives to decrease their sensitivity while not losing any performance, and of course, if the sensitivity of it is low in first place.

i havent, but it seems interesting...(for people without having "tons" of RDX or other high quality-HEs^^)

as far as i know, pure HNO3 have a VOD of 7600-7700m/s...

with adding this around 15% carbon conataining stuff you will get a strong (high leadblocktest amount) composition (optimal combustion of both inerts)....if you looking for some fast explosive, then i would add only a few (3-8) percents of the polystyrene or other Carbon-containing stuff with negative OB*...but then you will have some (acid-)explosive slurry (less good to handle i think^^)

*like Nitromethane, DNT
...and please dont mix ETN or other sensitive explosives into this...it will be damn dangerous

Why negative OB ? The optimum is not the zero 0B ?

Why would one even consider that crap? Do you know what nitric acid does in contact with flesh? What are you going to breathe in a room with this cr*p? Fuming HNO3 is hygroscopic, that means if you leave it, it absorbs a lot of water. What happens if the styrofoam is not the right composition?
There are robust HNO3/NO2 mixtures that are at lease predictable.

With 95% nitric acid, one could make RDX.
Mixtures with fuels like nitromethane and DNT are powerful, but very sensitive, corrosive and nasty to handle.

Pure HNO3 can't detonate. Its decomposition is endothermic.

He probably meant pure HClO4 ?

All the discussion in this thread are based on prediction and feeling without references. There is no much to learn!

because HNO3 is (of course^^) positive in OB - mixing negative with positive will probably become better nearly zero in OB ;) and will increase the combustion of both compounds...

oh wow...and how much? if you dont have acetic anhydride, you 're fucked...
the ratio of needed chems and resulting explosives are MUCH better this way, the thread starter said...

maybe, i read US3306789 and a graphic shows the theoretical VoD of pure HNO3...i know that it will be able/much-better/eqasier to ignite when there are carbon containing stuff in it...no one would try to detonate pure HNO3...would be a damn waste of containing energy

havent you been the one, praising the HNO3/Nitromethane composition at the "improvised shaped charges"-thread? ;)

(of course HNO3/NM is much better, just saying)
