Woodpaint
Hi there, right now I want to make a woodpaint or metalpaint. Does anyone know how to make them?

What's the application (internal / external; decorative / protective)? - how much do you need to make? Do you want it to be waterbased or
solvent based?
Paints are essentially a polymer binder, pigment, inert inexpensive filler and some dispersing agents (surfactants) with maybe some biocide. You
can then add things for rust prevention, fire protection , anti graffiti etc...

For a waterbased basic white formulation try:
75% Acrylic Binder in water emulsion (50%)
15 - 20 % TiO2 pigment
2% dispersing agent (commercial one for TiO2)
Maybe some Glycol as antifreeze - 0.5 -2 %
0.2% commercial biocide if shelf life is required.
aprox 1% (to the required thickness)thickening agent (high MW acrylic resin, celluose or std commercially available thickening agent)
For better resiliance externally try an Alkyd resin. Here is an idea for a start formulation:
~ 80% Alkyd resin (50 % emulsion in water)
~19% TiO2 (white pigment - finely ground)
~ 0.5 to 2 % standard commercial dispersing agent
Maybe some antifreeze ~ 0.5%
Maybe some cobalt based drying agent if curing times are important (loads of commercially available ones)
Thickner (of your choise) - amount depends on thickness required.
If this is just for a one off job/experiment then you could get away with the bare minimum of the following stirred well:
Aprox 80% Binder (acrylic or alkyd dispersion in water)
20% TiO2 pigment
In all cases:
The standard way to mix these is by
1)addind the pigment with a small amount of the binder or water and mixing into a thick paste (mill stage)
2) mix in the surfactants and additives
3) gradually add the rest of the binder/liquid with high stirring (Let down)
4) thicken to required viscosity with your chosen thickening agent.
