Vogel 3rd edition online

I have scanned the entirety of Arthur Vogel's Practical Organic Chemistry, 3rd edition, and converted it into a PDF with bookmarks for each section. It is not as compact or convenient as an OCR'd copy (you cannot search for arbitrary terms within the text), but you should be fine if you print out the table of contents and have it handy. I originally scanned the book at 600 DPI and tried to do OCR on that, but Abbyy Finereader, although a good program, doesn't deal well with chemical/technical symbols. If you have an OCR program that you think might do a better job, contact me privately and I'll arrange a transfer of the original 600 DPI TIFF files.

This book was first published in 1956, and appears never to have had its copyright renewed. I am going to be traveling and mostly offline starting this Friday and lasting for about a week, so don't get antsy if I seem unresponsive.

The PDF is wrapped in a zip file to prevent browser plugins from triggering and trying to just display the book onscreen. Download, then read. If you're on a dialup connection I highly recommend that you use a program such as GetRight to ensure that you are able to get this large (66 megabyte) file even if you are interrupted halfway through.

Now, after all the preamble, the file:

Thanks for that book!
Unfortunately I'll have to wait some days until I can take a look at it since I'm one of these "dial-uppers" :-|

How large are the images with 600 DPI in total? I think about doing the OCR... I'd also use Finereader (6.0 Corporate), but I would do images, structural formulas and so on "by hand".

The 600 DPI files...

...total about 150-160 MB, I believe. That would be great if you could do the translation of this text to a more compact format. It would require a *lot* of time, but I'm sure you realize that, given the prevalence of formulae and symbols in Vogel. Why, if you did a couple pages every day, you might have the whole thing done in a year! :-) Anyway, if you're willing to take on the task, contact me privately and I'll set up an FTP account for you.

Broken link

I use Getright and have only 7% left to download, and now the link seem to be broken. Could you please activate the link again.

Sorry about my unavailability...

Both Plasma and Rhadon: the reason I haven't gotten back to you about this book is because the server housing it (and serving the e-mail account that I use to communicate) is currently offline. We are remodeling a room and moving the servers. I can't believe my professor would let them go offline for a week but it looks like they will be. I hope your mail doesn't bounce. I'm quite sorry about the delay. Plasma, I will reactivate the link when the server is back up so you can grab that last 7%. Alternatively, you can grab the book in DjVu format (much smaller than PDF) from Rhodium's site at http://www.rhodium.ws/chemistry/vogel3.html

No problem! Just tell me when if the server is online again and my e-mail hasn't arrived.

Whoops, there was a mixup

Servers aren't going to be offline for a whole week after all. Rhadon, check your mail, and Plasma, you can finish downloading that last 7% if you want. Let me know when you're done with it so I can take it offline again.

Hey, Polverone, how long are you planning on leaving it up for? I have about the first 20 percent done. If they are planning to take the server down, let me know, Ill finish downloading it when the server goes back up.

Thanks,
Raistlin

I was going to shut it down again when Plasma was finished but I guess I can leave it up for you too. I do need to take it down soon. That book and the Muspratt stuff have yielded 18 GB of traffic over the last month, more than ten times the amount of bandwidth the normal academic materials on the server consumed. Muspratt will stay, but Vogel must go.

Thanks Polverone!
I always wanted to photoprint Vogel's, and now it is on my hard disk :).
Many modus operandis of various kinds of synthesis from general chemicals...always handy.
Even if I know a lot, I prefer to have a made/fiable patern to follow when experimenting.

:D Good Work!

Vogel preview

I was on holiday for some days... Before that, I had planned to give you a preview of the OCR'ed Vogel, but I didn't get to it before I had to go. Nevertheless, here it is, if you want to take a first look at it. I've uploaded 61 pages that are completely proof-read and formatted. There may still be some minor mistakes (and the page numbers in the TOC will have to be rewritten), but it's pretty much like it will be in the final release.

If the download doesn't work, your firewall does probably block the referer for come2store.com.

*Excellent* work, Rhadon!

The PDF looks gorgeous. I know how incredibly tedious it is to make books available, and your job is even more grueling than mine. If there is anybody out there lurking with the time and patience to perform a task like Rhadon's (converting high-res scanned graphics to OCR versions), by all means speak up!

I will also take this opportunity to tantalize you with the nature of my next scanning project: it will be Some Aspects of the Chemistry and Toxic Action of Organic Compounds Containing Phosphorus and Fluorine by Bernard Charles Saunders, which serves as a fine introduction to these fascinating chemicals.

Your new project seems to be fine, Polverone! I'm looking forward for that one. Although this makes me aware of the fact that your scanner can do its job faster than I can do mine :D

Hmm, I see Rhadon hasnt posted a link to the OCR'd version of Vogel and Polverone's copy has been down for a while. :( Is there anywhere in particular this file is hiding that I get ahold of? I've been skimming through chem books in the stores and I think I'll purchase a copy on Organic chemisty next, it just seems so interesting how many combinations of C and H there are, and how complex it can get. :D

The book is now hosted permanently on Rhodium's site, http://www.rhodium.ws. It is in DjVu format, not PDF, so you will need to download a DjVu viewer. DjVu is (from what I understand) a format much like PDF but one that gives much better compression.

Aaron-V2.0, sorry for not answering your message till now, but currently I do only have access to the internet from time to time.
The reason why I didn't offer as link for the OCR'ed version is that it simply isn't done (by far!) :) I only have done about 10% of the pages right now, but this is because I had to do a complete reorganization of the layout.
When it's done, I'll be sure to post the link.

updated version available

After nearly a year, I have cleaned up my original scans, applied OCR, and made a JBIG2-compressed PDF of Vogel's fine text. Rhodium has hosted Vogel for a year; now there will be at least two sites with the book, with accompanying size/quality tradeoffs.
