Guanidine nitrate source?

Anyone know of an American source for guanidine nitrate or other guanidine compounds?
  • Firefox-fx's website lists it as in stock, but I don't think they're still in operation.
  • Pyro Chem Source has it for $8/lb but doesn't ship to PO boxes. Hobby Chemical Supply seems to be run by the same owner.
  • Invictus Supply Co has it for $40/lb, a high price from a unknown supplier.
  • Alibaba sellers quote guanidine HCl at $80/kg.
  • mario840 can get nitrate or HCl from big suppliers (at their high prices of $300+/kg), but tariffs make shipping to the US very difficult right now.

I understand that guanidine nitrate can be made from molten urea and ammonium nitrate, but I'd rather not do that. Seems smelly and dangerous, and AN is tough for me to get.

GN is very easy to make via the process you mentioned, although the yields can vary based on how you do it. If you're concerned about the danger, just use a cheap beaker and surround your hotplate in paver stones or wood while it runs - if there's any explosion (unlikely) it'll be contained. Ammonia smell is no big issue, and I don't know if other NH4 salts could be used but it may be possible instead of the use of AN.

Pyrochemsource is your best bet; I've bought GN from them before with no issues. Don't expect most suppliers to ship to PO Boxes though, especially with chemicals. If you're nervous about shipping GN to a residential address, I wouldnt worry, it is very benign. I've shipped far more sketchy chemicals internationally to my house with no issues from couriers or LEO.

This may be interesting for you: https://www.laboratoriumdiscounter.nl/en/guanidine-carbonate...

This is the carbonate, not suspicious at all. No oxidizing properties, not overly toxic. If you have nitric acid, then you easily can make the nitrate yourself by mixing dilute solutions and crystallizing from that.

I'm not sure about the shipping from the EU to the USA, but you could ask. Given the benign nature of this salt, it should be no problem.

Here are a couple of sources. BTW, I have not personally ordered from these, but they seem to be reputable.

https://www.chemimpex.com/products/29919?variant=44284924526... Gu2CO3 ($55/kg or $25/lb.)
https://www.chemimpex.com/products/37253?variant=44287210127... GuNO3 ($280/kg or $127/lb.)
https://www.fireworkscookbook.com/product/guanidine-nitrate/ GuNO3 ($20/lb; out of stock)
https://www.chemscene.com/product/593-85-1.html Gu2CO3 ($53/kg or $24/lb.)

It seems the nitrate is MUCH more expensive than the carbonate, unless you get it from a pyro supplier. If you do choose to purchase from Chem-impex, please let me know how the sale goes, so I can note it in my list of suppliers.

[Edit]: I have now added the couple of sites you mentioned to my supplier list.

Chemimpex is legit, I ordered 5-MeOT from them before but I ordered it on a company email and had it shipped to said conpany warehouse. I was able to switch the company email to my personal on my account with them but if I ordered again and shipped to a residential address I don't know how they'd handle that.

Good to know. They have quite a variety of chemicals available, and at reasonable prices for many. If anyone knows if they ship residential, please let me know so I can update my list of suppliers.
