MAJOR HMTD MISHAP!!

Let me first start by saying what a great website.

Today I was mixing 84 grams of hexamine with 250 ml of 35% peroxide. I then added 100 grams of citric acid slowly, all the while in an ice bath.

Then I take it out and let it sit for 3 hours. I come home an my house is full of smoke and smells like fish! My dad smacked me!!

WHAT DID I DO WRONG?

Making a high explosive while you obviously know nothing about chemistry for starters...

You're off to a bad start here, begging to be spoon fed knowhow
which is readily available from authoritative sources, not internet
recipes. Your fathers concern is justified given that organic peroxides
are too unpredictable to mess with cavalierly. When you eventually
succeed as you seem determined to do, consider the thrill of being
maimed and reduce to a tenth the amounts you use, as described
here _

From page 451 of Chemistry of Powder and Explosives by T.L. Davis
Preparation of Hexamethylenetriperoxidediamine, Fourteen grams of
hexamethylenetetramine is dissolved in 45 grams of 30% hydrogen
peroxide solution which is stirred mechanically in a beaker standing
in a freezing mixture of cracked ice with water and a little salt. To the
solution 21 grams of powdered citric acid is added slowly in small
portions at a time while the stirring is continued and the temperature
of the mixture is kept at 0° or below. After all the citric acid has dissolved,
the mixture is stirred for 3 hours longer while its temperature is kept
at 0 °C. The cooling is then discontinued, the mixture is allowed to
stand for 2 hours at room temperature, and the white crystalline
product is filtered off, washed thoroughly with water, and rinsed with
alcohol in order that it may dry out more quickly at ordinary temperatures.

Compare this to your very brief outline of a " recipe ", in particular what
you omitted to say and probably also neglected to do.

Recipe? Oh, very bad choice of words.

Who told you to leave your reaction unattended?

And you did this indoors, rather than in a garage?

I'd guess you released a lot of NOx, so you are lucky that your dad and anyone else isn't in the hospital right now.

If your dad knew the danger you put your family in he's smack you again.

It is obvious you screwed up somewhere.
It could have been stupidly huge amounts causing poor heat transfer.
If could have been leaving a massive synthesis of primary explosive unattended.

You need to read more(and more in depth than cookbooks) before you play with explosives.

And since cookbook procedures for making HMTD are out of the scope of this forum
