Another avenue that hasn't particularly been explored here, is how cheaply can you get potassium carbonate and muriatic acid? You would likely need to recrystallize the resulting KCl once, but for every liter of HCl you'd get about 750g of KCl.

Potassium chloride is mined in a more or less pure state and it has uses in everyday life eg water softening, topping up marine aquarium potassium levels so it is fairly readily available.
Hydrochloric acid is cheap and easy to get hold of but potassium carbonate is a bit of a bugger. It is manufactured on a lot smaller scale than sodium carbonate and availability is limited. It is not controlled in any way but it is harder to get hold of and more expensive.

I have good access to HCl, however the K2CO3 would be the problem... i am probably going to try getting it from Ashes, however i odnt know how reliable that will be, and it will take a long time as no odubt millions of other salts are in there with it...
After that, if all else fails, i will try recrystalisation of lo-salt... i could do with the experience lol
