I have recently purchased one of these off ebay:

Myn is the IA 9200 model.

My only problem is have no idea how it works and it doesnt come with a instruction manual and i dont know where to get one.
Does anybody have this type of apparatus and can tell me how it works or cas scan in a copy of the instruction manual?

Thanks,

Did you have any melting point tube (really small test tube, almost capilair tube in size)?
Did you have a long and small glass tube (1 meter)?

If you have all those thing, you simply have to put 0,5 cm of product in the melting point tube and drop it in the long tube. The small tube will bounce to the ground and the product will be compress.
During this time, preheat the apparatus to 10 C below the supposed melting point point of the product.
Put the M.P. tube in the apparatus and fill the empty space with empty tube (I don't know if it change someting, but I always do this). The apparatus that i use at school have 3 spaces.
When you start the heating, the temperature will increase slowly.
Always check the small tube. The product will start to melt (first stage, where the product seem like slush). Not long after this stage, the product will completly melt, giving you temperature like 156,3 C - 157,0 C.

Does it use capillary tubes or microscope cover slides? Looks like it might be the latter. Mine uses a regular partial immersion thermometer and capillary tubes.

Ahhh.. this is a Thermo product. It uses capillary tubes. I agree, terribly confusing. Here's what I can remember:

The buttons don't clue you into their function.
1.) Set the start temp using the up/down arrows.
2.) Press the curved up arrow to start heating
3.) Beeps three times when reaches start temp.
4.) Set ramp rate with up/down arrows
5.) Press curved arrow again to start heating
6.) Press tear drop button to save melting onset/offset for each sample.

Honestly - and sorry for this - this instrument is a piece of junk given how hideously difficult it is to use.

Yes it uses capillary tubes.
I know how to use MP apparatus (generally).
I use them at school all the time however this one is different. I dont know how to ramp temperatures or even make it heat up for that matter!
@Arrhenius- i completly agree, looking at the prices for a new one of these (£1,200) i am amazed at how complicated it is!

Just an update.

I have (after hours of pushing random buttons) manged to get it to work (well kind of!)
I can not make it ramp it up quickly up to a certain temperature, which it does so perfectly and quickly so i know it is working.
The only problem now is i dont know how to ramp it up slowly as i am approaching the m.p. of the target substance. Any advice?
Arrhenius - there are no arrow buttons on this model, only numbers! help!

Capillary tubes diameter

I got my hands on a broken IA9200. It was an easy fix since only an tantalium capacitor had to be replaced.
So now I have a question about the diameter of the capillary tubes.
How much does the diameter of these tubes matter?
Electrothermal says to use 2mm outer diameter tubes but what will be the influence on the measurement (accuracy) when I use 1.3mm diameter tubes?
