How to prepare aluminium amalgam from HgCl2?

Here is where I'm unsure.

After I submerge the Al foil in a dH2O solution with HgCl2, the reaction kicks in after about 2-3 minutes with violent boiling. It boils off all the water and leaving a brittle, almost powdery aluminium in the beaker.

Is this brittle, powder-like Aluminium substance suitable as a reducing agent or have I overdone it?

Since this is an obvious extension of this closed thread, I will lock this one down too.
This is not the place for recipes for banned substances.
