Does magnesium carbide (MgC2 ?) exist ?
The well-known calcium carbide must have a Mg equivalent as it is in the same Alkali Earth metals group.
But, presumably it does not exist and cannot be made by electric arcing MgO + C.
Does somebody know why ?

it exists!
possible to make with intering of magnesium fluoride and calcium carbide or passing acetylene over magnesium powder (it needs 500C). there also are
Mg2C3 and MgC2.
just some reactions of carbides.
