I found the horrible turquoise of nickel sulfate while trying to write a question about the circuit

I have seen some people use large mantles as though they were benchtop furnaces that looked far nastier. As sulfated as this is, sulfuric acid might not cause all that much damage in the given time span assuming you tried to save the element quickly. anything is more likely to cause arcing through those salts damaging the wire that way, than directly corroding the nichrome.
