Most educational institutions that have an internal network with external internet access will be firewalled. The FTP browser must use different
settings in order to get around the firewall and in some cases a password is required.
If you are using internet explorer as your FTP browser, go to
Tools > Internet Options
Click on the "Advanced" tab and select the checkbox for "Passive FTP" under the heading "Browsing". Then try again to
access the FTP.
If you are using an FTP client such as CuteFTP or similiar, then look for the PASV or Passive FTP connection option in the settings for that
particular application. Make sure it is selected and then try to access the FTP.
The above usually fixes the problem if you are behind a firwewall or have a DSL modem. It's worth the try. Thats all the advice I can offer.

Invoke? ... lol ... you could explain that, but I dont think it'll help! As lum has said, the problem is on my end with a firewall or simular
blocking access.
The browser wont let me access the advanced options, bloody restrictions.
I can only say that the previously mentioned address in the now deleted ftp thread allowed access to eliteforums ftp on these same computers, though
it would never allow uploading. It opens up as a webpage rather then a file folder as per the attached image which was accessed by this computer.
I believe it comes down to integrating the address/usename/password all into the same address .. but I dont know how to do it, nor can I find how to.

The standard method of integrating the username and password into an FTP address goes as follows(removing the "+" :
+ftp://username:password@address
So in your case Axt, you should present the address as follows:
+ftp://axt:******@species8472.dyndns.org

I downloaded the file "solid_acid_catalysts.pdf" but it seems to be damaged (or got damaged whilst traveling to mine?). I believe it was
from Polverones folder - if somebody could check this please and re-upload it?

The one I downloaded myself is damaged too. I don't recall which files but there are some other pdfs which seem to be damaged too.

All file systems check out OK. The file(s) must have been damaged before they were uploaded. I've never seen Linux send erroneous network data
from a file or, for that matter, have filesystem errors without a faulty disk --- and that would yield a filesystem error rather than silently corrupt
data.
The FTP is on a reiserfs filesystem on one of my RAID5 arrays.

The file solid_acid_catalysts was damaged on the CD I was storing it on. There appear to be a few other dodgy files on this CD. I don't know if
this is the storage medium itself deteriorating or if they were always bad on this CD. Given the size of the solid_acid_catalysts.pdf and where I
retrieved it from, I am pretty sure it's a Chem. Rev. or Industrial and Engineering Chemistry article. I will try to grab it again.

After a quick search I have found out the following files to be damaged, at least in my case.
' _indx.pdf '
' H2O2-propellant.pdf '
(I think both have been downloaded from Polverone's folder, but I'm not sure)
That's all I found for now. Anyway, I will report any damaged files I'll find.

Files structure
Hello Axehandle,
How about folders labled as explosives, precursors, pyrotechnics, weapons, etc..
Then break now each catagory with a separate folder for pdf files, word files, plain text,and etc.
Just a thought!
P.S., is there a way to search?

Hmm, I also agree on creating folders based on topics. Not wanting to praise myself, but the structure you can see in the chemoleo directory makes
sense to me... thats because I created it of course.
I would put all software into a separate directory, regardless it's use - i.e. chem. programs, databases etc all into a software directory.
Ebooks of whatever type (pdf, txt, djvu, doc) in subject categories. I would possibly actually separate proper general ebooks and specific
preparations, into subfolders of a given section.
Regardless, the aim is to enable the user to find a specific pdf on a subject as fast as possible. If general ebooks on, say, explosives are separated
from the much more numerous specific preaparation pdfs (such as patents, etc) then it should be easier to find what you want. I have attempted to do
this in the chemoleo/energetic_chemistry section.
Whether you agree with the latter or not, the FTP definitely has to be ordered against category, however.
PS as to searching, aren't there programs that generate file lists automatically, that basically list the whole directory/file structure in a
text file? The idea would be for the user to download this list, and search for himself.

Just want to thank axehandle - I finally could download the Kirk-Othmer and I had a real good speed which was obviously more limited by the connection

Can I just ask (for the lack of another place to ask), what happened to this guy who had this big patent collection in a new thread (which came from
http://www.pat2pdf.com/ ), and who also posted in this thread about the file structure?
I am wondering because that collection was well-ordered, and with a LARGE amount of VERY useful information... and now it seems to be gone

Corrupted KO ?
I got the Kirk-Othmer image as well, but the file seems corrupted, as, once mounted, it appears not to be accessible.
Has anybody else faced the same problem with this file ?

You have to burn it on CD (Nero works fine) by using the cuesheet (.cue) and the settings: "disk at once" (not "track at once" and it will work fine.
Once burned on CD you can install the Kirk-Othmer on your harddisk.
I believe Rhadon told that this version does not support Win-XP, but I am not sure on this.
