Gold Oxide

Hey, I have a tiny amount of gold (mainly scrap gold) and I want to turn it into gold oxide.

My first thought was to put it into solution with KNO3+HCl and then add sodium hydroxide/carbonate to precipitate gold hydroxide/carbonate which I could then decompose into gold oxide.

But is it that simple or does the chloroauric acid complex not behave as straightforward as I hoped?

And that would be energetic how ?
Also ... Aurous or Auric ?
Neutralization of Chloroauric acid with a alkali carbonate should form the hydrated Auric oxide..
Using carbonate will minimize the chance of forming complexes.

Auric yeah. So adding a carbonate to chloroauric acid will create gold oxide, no gold carbonate formed?

Energetic?

By itself, hydrated gold oxide is most probably not energetic (although it decomposes to oxygen and gold easily when heated). It can probably be used to make energetic thermite mixtures with aluminium or magnesium, but it's not worth it. Better to use it, or finely-powdered gold, for non-energetic purposes (e.g, as a catalyst for certain reactions)

How much gold do you have and of what purity ?
I thought about fulminating gold but it hardly seems worth it.

Gold Oxide is a highly insoluble thermally stable Gold source suitable for glass, optic and ceramic applications. Two independent pathways for corrosion of elements are hydrolysis and oxidation by oxygen. The combination of water and oxygen is even more corrosive.

Well I was thinking about doing a gold thermite. That should be pretty energetic :D
Or is it really not worth the effort?

You gold potentially lose like 30-50$ of gold.

Gold thermite???

I don't think you will get much bang for your buck.

(sorry, I couldn't resist).

Not worth it, in both the monetary and empirical sense. Gold thermite will look like every other thermite, and if the thermite was big enough, there might be some molten gold in your crucible afterwards.

Aww maybe not then, that pun has disheartened me quite a bit haha. Thought it would be the most viloent thermite, becuase of gold's low reactivity?

It maybe violent .... But you can similar results with lot less with CuO thermite or flash powder.

Of course but.... gold.. thermite... ah fine. I give up.

But the fulminating gold looks fascinating! There a thread for this already?

Ok ok ... You want to try Gold thermite. Lets try 2 experiments in one ....
How about you also cover a small quantity with a a small beaker or similar .... To see if gold vapor will deposit itself on the glass. Quartz/Gold mirrors are more efficient in reflecting infra red than standard mirrors.
Also this way you might some of your gold back..
