Interest in carbon disulfide?

Just throwing this out there: I recently obtained 1l of carbon disulfide, but don't really need that much... If there is an interested person in Canada who would like some, let me know and I will look into shipping options/cost as it will have to be sent by FedEx. Cannot sell to minors, however. Sorry.

How will he know you're minor if you state you are 54-year old, hairy beer-belly with Ph.D in every scientific phenomenom? :D

I'm just trying to do my due diligence, to the best of my abilities. Of course if a member tells me they're of age of majority, what am I to do? :) I'm just afraid of selling some to a minor who then goes and has an accident with a highly flammable material that causes some horrific consequence.... I would be mortified and perhaps in lots of trouble...

Anyways- maybe selling some of this is not such a great idea? Am I just putting myself in potential shit?

I think that you can safely sell it to plante1999. He will not use it to be k3wl.

Keep in mind though that shipping this stuff can be difficult. It is VERY volatile (boiling point somewhere around 45 C) and extremely flammable (boiling water can ignite vapor of this stuff). I do not know Canadian shipping regulations, but be sure that it cannot leak when in transit!

Plante will be fine with it, im sure...
Its no more dangerous than 500ml of gasoline I wouldnt think. People ship worse things 'round here, but im no expert on shipping liability.

edit; ooops you beat me to it.
Damn, I didnt know its auto ignition point was THAT low. scary.

Mailinmypocket, perhaps you should consider selling it on a collection-only basis? You can therefore ensure the age of the recipient and avoid any potential trouble with shipping.

Pickup would be difficult I think since there are no forum members that live near me (I think). I am currently waiting on a response from the shipping company to see how an individual can ship hazardous materials... CS2 is extremely flammable and volatile so I absolutely must ensure that no leaks or other issues can occur. Ill report back plante, once I can get some solid information. Local pickup would be ideal but given the many hours driving between us I'm not sure that would work :(

Where abouts are you located? I might be interested in a small quantity, say 20-50mL. Only if you are close by though. Im in BC.

fedex has this deep frozen and cold shipping option used to transport temperature sensitive samples, might increase the cost of it significantly though.
you'll probably only need the cold shipping opion, where it maintains the temperature from 2°C to 8°C for up to 48 hours,
the deep frozen one uses liquid nitrogen and can last up to 10 days, so theres almost no risk of the item reaching its autoignition temp.
though im guessing both are really quite costly, so you might just want them to self collect it

honestly doubt theres many canadians on here that scrolls by this, including before mentionened also has no respect for chemistry, no idea how you put out a fire or handle dangerous chemicals, a true k3wl thinks hey carbon disulfide
neat
no offense tho
that chemical is usually only for organic chemistry isnt it? dont see how many k3wls would even know what it is

Carbon disulfide is very useful in chemistry in general, and a very very neat precursor to chelating agent. It is also of great use in metal solution analysis. It can dissolve phosphorus, and it is very volatile.

I never asked for this.

the only "k3wl" thing that comes to mind using carbon disulfide would be the barking dog reaction, and cleanup is kind of troublesome.

It looks like shipping this properly is out of the question :( after speaking to the shipping company I was told that in order to ship hazardous materials I need to have passed a certification course in hazmat shipping... That's unfortunate but I suppose it's a good thing at the same time. I wouldn't want my employees driving around with packages of poorly packed hazardous things that might cause mayhem or injuries.

cant you ask him to ship one single thing, and then take pictures etc. of how you pack it?
a thickwalled glassbottle aswell as styrofoam / lots of cardboard is usually enough
perhaps sealed in a plastic bag
you could perhaps ask him what exactly is needed to be seen as safe for flammable / combustible liquids
its not always that even worse compounds than that is packed as well as it should be

i mean he must be able to tell you what a hazmat standard packaging is about

I live 2 hours west of Ottawa and I would be interested in a small quantity. Are you in that area?
