Exploding snake question

A couple days ago, I was watching "Mythbusters" and they were testing thing you might be able to do at home. One of which was the exploding snake with sugar and sulfuric acid.
then after that they did the same thing but with a compound not said, the sulfuric acid and heat it for a while. the mixture exploded in a puff of smoke and as the smoke cleared a pillar of carbon was there. I'm curious on what the mysterious compound was. I couldn't find a video of it on youtube. however there was a small clip on discover website.

I seem to have difficulty referencing my hobbies as "safe".
