Yeah, I am hoping that a protonated Phenolic oxygen in conjunction with the electronegative region on the =O in the ester bond would be enough to couple. As a future experiment I will have to change were the chain is added.

I'll update this tomorrow.

Well, methyl salicylate is readily available. See what that will do with copper(II), if anything.
