Chloroform

Hello,

I would like to make chloroform for use in extracting Caffeine from coffee. An article on wikipedia says mixing..."Sodium hypochlorite solution and acetone produces chloroform, sodium hydroxide, sodium acetate, and sodium chloride.

Does this reaction produce the gas chloroform, or is it disolved in the liquid?
Is there a better/safer way to make chloroform - I need about 200ml.

Would really appreciate some help,

thanks,

The acetone + hypochlorite synthesis produces small amounts of carbon tetrachloride, a carcinogen. Even chloroform itself is suspect here. I would suggest finding another solvent, or at least another source of chloroform.

Dichloromethane can replace chloroform nearly always if it is used as solvent, and is definately easier to get (distill from paint stripper).
Of course, it would be even better if a non- chlorinated solvent could be used, for both health and environmental concerns.

Thanks for the help guys, I wan't to use something as safe as possible to purify caffeine from something. I just found a product called No-Doz...you can check it out on this website:

http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/detail?prodid=169052&a...

There as 60 tablets with 200mg of caffeine each...total of 12 grams in package.

If I crush up the tablets and use a solvent, could I get fairly pure caffiene without all the additives in the tablet?

Are there any other solvents I can use besides Chloromethane and Dichloromethane for caffiene?

thanks,

Mericad, there also is a thread on caffeine extraction, as well as people above pointed out, discssions on the making of chloroform.
Please search, and continue your questions/issues there.
