colour of Methylamine

When making MeNH2.HCl from hexamine and HCl, after the reaction;

1) is the solution always yellow or can it be clear?
2) If you more HCl than is necessary to hydrolyse the hex, say 2% by moles, can you assume that all the hex has reacted thereby negating the acetone wash?

1) It's always been slightly yellow when I've done it.
2) It's silly to assume anything. Try it, maybe it will work, but acetone is so common everywhere (that I know of) that I would just use the wash...
