Chemical routes to poly(?-malic acid) and potential applications of this water-soluble bioresorbable poly(?-hydroxy alkanoate)
Michel Vert
Polymer Degradation and Stability Volume 59, Issues 1-3 , January-March 1998, Pages 169-175

Abstract
The main routes of synthesis to poly(?-malic acid) and to its derivatives are presented. Most of them are based on the ring-opening polymerization of ?-substituted ?-lactonic compounds. However, chemical modifications by partial hydrogenolysis of benzyl protecting groups or by coupling on the pre-formed polycarboxylic acid polymer give access to other derivatives such as copolymers and terpolymers with various pendent groups including drugs or cross-linking agents. The presence of centers of chirality along the polymer backbone enlarges very much the number of different polymer structures that can be generated. The main properties of this poly(carboxylic acid) and of its derivatives are recalled and are used to discuss the main potential applications of malic acid-based polyesters.
