Methylamine hcl in place of methylamine?

AFOAF has some benzaldehyde, nitroethane, and methylamine hcl.

now what would happen if methylamine hcl was used in the synth to phenyl2nitropropene?

ive read that using benz and nitroethane with methylamine diluted aqueous solution is a great way to get p2np but all my friend has access to is methylamine hydrochloride.

And since he cant seem to find a simple way to get freebase methylamine from the salt he just wants to use it as is, will thist work at all? he doesnt care if yields are lower just as long as it works to an extent.

NaOH isn't simple enough for you?

The methylamine is the basic catalyst so bubble it into
the condensation mixture. A strongly basic amine is used
not a salt..
