reduction nitrate

Can it reduce the nitrate with Al? I have even read that it can reduce with S + NaOH to produce nitrite and NaSO4. Is this safe? There is explosion risk?

uNitrate + aluminum = fireworks. S + NaOH makes a messy mixture of compounds and the final product would be hard to isolate. The standard procedure is to use lead, IIRC.

I tried this reaktion with sodium nitrate and lead,
putted the lead in the molten NaNO3 and stirred for a while.
After half an hour noething happened, donĀ“t know why but after the mix solidifies I could see that the lead has just molten and accumulated at the bottom of the glass pot.
- No yellow PbO at all.

Which the yield is heating nitrate? There would be a mixture nitrate and nitrite. It would be necessary to separate them.
