Colloidal Synthesis


I've been trying to design a homebake method of colloidal synthesis to produce particles in the micrometre range

The procedure is outlined below, it hasn't been tested yet and it probably is suboptimal. If anyone could suggest improvements it'd be appreciated. Also, where would one obtain soluble polymers of analytical grade?

I'm guessing that even with the right kind of ingredients, parameters like concentration & viscosity will have a huge impact on the final result

1. Prepare saturated solution of salt, e.g. Fe2Cl3 in water, say 20mL
2. Measure out refined peanut oil or some other oil with the required viscosity, say 80mL
3. Transfer solution to a pipette
4. Transfer a surfactant to another pipette
5. Add solution to the oil dropwise, while adding surfactant dropwise
6. Adjust relative solution / surfactant amounts to ensure the solution is completely dissolved with the minimum amount of surfactant
7. Gas the mixture with H2S in excess inside a fume hood

One of the most important things when trying to get a colloid or a decent dispersion is the mixing - the above method may be fine if the mixing apperatus you have is good. You need a the right type of mixer and preferably something like a baffled flask to ensure the right turbulance for the droplets to form evenly.
