purifying low grade sulfur


does anyone know a good method of purifying fertilizer grade elemental sulfur? i have a bag of it and its pretty much useless unless i can purify it.

IIRC, wash with water; melt and filter through paper; etc. If you're really into it, dissolve in hot CS2, filter and recrystallize, then distill a few times.

I forget what exactly Brauer says, but it's in there.

There's been a thread on this before, UTFSE.

If you search for "garden sulfur" the FSE will return three threads, at least two of which appear helpful.

The FSE actually WORKS on this one, as I posted above. 497 obviously wasn't trying very hard and this thread surely is redundant.

Use hot toluene for recrystalization.... although one would probably spend more on wasted solvents than ordering high purity sulfur from a pyro shop.



Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer.
