FeS, fluorine and Nurdrage's video


Hello to everyone. Today I tried to produce iron sulfide with 4g of sulfur and 7g of iron powder. I put some ammount in a small crucible in my stove (because I could not use my bunsen burner). When the sulfur got fire with blue flame, I put an asbestos screen on the crucible to turn off the fire. Apparently, the mixture was homogenous, so I turned off the stove. I tested the mixture with concentrated hydrochloric acid to check out if it would have rutten egg smell from hydrogen sulfide released. The reaction worked VERY slowly, so I decided toheat in a test tube. Fortunately, it released a lot of a non-flammable gas. However, firstly, the iron sulfide was attracted by magnet, so what do you think? Iron sulfide is not attracted by magnet, if I am sure. The gas released was not hydrogen, so the mixture was not iron.
Changing the subject, I intend to make fluorine gas, so how can I produce it with hydrofluoric acid? (that will be made from fluorite and concentrated sulfuric acid).
Another thing is that Nurdrage deleted its video of potassium metal preparation. Anyone have this video to post here, please?

I strongly urge you not to prepare <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluorine#Hazards" target="_blank">fluorine</a> <img src="../scipics/_wiki.png" /> gas. It's insanely dangerous and will ignite most materials on contact (including flesh)!

Thank you bfesser. I already saw this topic about potassium metal preparation, but I have no idea where I can buy Shellsol.RTM D70 . Do you know if it is in a Shell product? (Sorry for the noob question hahaha). I think that tertiary butanol is also a little bit dificult to find.

This is long discussed in the potassium thread. Other similar alcohols may work aswell i.e. 2, 2, dimethyl butyl alcohol. Read that thread, and good luck mate!

DON'T! :mad: Unless you're a very experienced experimenter and very well equipped (with fall back procedures for when things get out of hand) BOTH HF and F2 are recipes for very serious and potentially LETHAL accidents.

For potassium from catalysed Mg reduction, various solvents work. Read the thread. On one of the last pages you'll find a nice summary of the whole thing, put together by 'Mr Home Scientist'.
